complete table setup (mats, racks, tiles, automatic shufflers, dice),current NMJL cards, and a great selection of beverages are all included. You’re also welcome to bring your own favorite food and drinks if you’d like, or even have them delivered.

Absolutely! Our beginner classes and series are designed for first-time players, and we’ll guide you step by step so you feel confident and have fun at Mahj House Austin. 

Our Beginner Classes and Series are perfect for new players. Level Up Play, Guided Play, and Open Play (our drop-in, no-reservation table time for players who already know the basics) are designed for intermediate and advanced players, and we don't offer introductory instruction during those sessions.

Yes! Our beginner curriculum is thoughtfully designed and taught by instructors with 40+ years of combined teaching experience, so you’ll learn step by step with confidence at Mahj House Austin. 

Our Beginner Series is the best place to start for someone who does not know how to play. Over the course of 4 relaxed, fun-filled weeks, you'll master the basics of mahjong, surrounded by a small group of up to 7 other players who are starting right where you are. No experience? Perfect-you're in exactly the right spot! Classes include your very own NMJL 2025 official card (a $15 value)!

Guided Play sessions are opportunities to ask questions while you play, but the players are the ones setting the pace for play. This isn’t a formal lesson — it’s structured play with one of our instructors nearby to answer questions, clarify tricky calls, and help you think through strategy as it comes up. You’ll build confidence, improve your pace, and deepen your understanding of the card — all while playing together.

   New here? Start with a Beginner Class or Bootcamp. We'll teach you everything you need to know—from tiles to strategy—in a warm, welcoming setting. No experience required.
2. Step 2: Practice with Support
   Played a few times? Join Guided Play. This is where it clicks. Play real games with coaching, ask questions, and build confidence in a low-pressure environment.
3. Step 3: Become a Regular
   Ready to play? Come to Open Play. Pull up a chair, meet new friends, and settle into the rhythm of the game. This is your space to unwind, connect, and play often.
4. Step 4: Host & Elevate
   Love the game? Make it your thing. Host your own table, book a private event, or dive into advanced strategy. Mahjong becomes more than a game—it becomes part of your life.

No. Mahjong is played with 4 players, so if you would like to play with someone you know, bring them along! When you sign up, you’ll answer a few questions about your playing style and level. We will do our best to seat you with someone who has a similar level of play.
